Martial arts academy steps up to help teen By Heather Rudow, Advocate Staff Writer Carroll County Times | 0 comments

The members of Tristar Martial Arts Academy's spring Black Belt class knew they had to help someone in the South Carroll area to complete the Community Commitment portion of their curriculum, but they never imagined it would be a fellow classmate.

Co-owner Keith Thompson said the entire academy was shocked this past January when 14-year-old Zachary Gallagher was rushed to Carroll Hospital Center after his head hit a rock during a sledding accident.

"Zachary's been coming here a long time," he said. "He's a phenomenal student and a super guy."

Zachary's mother, Tracey, said he suffered a fracture in his right temporal lobe as well as a contusion on the right side of his brain. She said the last three months have not been easy for her son.

"In order to properly heal he can't talk or chew," Tracey said. "He's improving, but it's going to be a long road for him to get back to normal."

In the beginning, she said, bright lights and noises were painful for him, so he spent a lot of his time sitting in the dark. These days he is able to read for up to 40 minutes without too much difficulty, but Tracey said it will be a long time before he's able to come back to Tristar, a place he's practiced since was 4½ But Tristar's members have not forgotten about Zachary. Along with soliciting monetary donations during testing events and practices, the academy's black belt class held a bake sale to raise funds for Zachary's medical bills. Since the accident the academy has donated more than $7,100 to the Gallagher family. The money was greatly needed and appreciated, Tracey said, as until recently, the family did not have any insurance.

And, along with visiting and sending cards, Thompson said, the academy has set up web cams in the studio so Zachary could watch demo team events, a team he's been on for the last four years.

Tracey said she and her husband cannot put into words how grateful they are for all of the support they have received from the academy.

"When they found out Zachary was hurt, it was as if they were family and they wanted to help," she said. "Even people we didn't really know. It's just so overwhelming, a wonderful, overwhelming feeling. When you're at Tristar, you're a part of the Tristar family."

Black belt classmate Kevin Starkey has been comin g to Tristar with his son Connor for the last four years, and though he only knew Zachary a little, he said as a father and a member of the Tri star family, he knew he had to contribute money to the cause.

"It touched home," he said. "I couldn't imagine that happening to a kid, who was just being a kid. He was just sledding, not riding a motorcycle with his helmet off."

Black Belt classmate Kaitlyn Johnson baked scones for the bake sale, and she said every member of Tristar is like an adopted sibling, no matter how well you know him.

"We knew we needed to help in some way," she said, "because with Tristar we're one big family."

Although he is only able to write down things he wants to say, Tracey said, Zachary tells her all the time how much he misses being at Tristar. She said the family is looking forward to May 5, when a neurologist will be able to give Zachary a timetable as to when he can think about coming back. She said she believes Zachary's martial arts training has helped him improve and also not sustain permanent damage from the accident.

"Even one of the doctors said from the very beginning that the martial arts helped with his body [being strong]," Tracey said. "Plus with the recovery, the Black Belt creed talks about restraint, self control ... [the idea] that nothing can knock you down. It's remarkable."

EXCITING NEWS!

Shidoshi competed this past weekend at the New Jersey Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Winter Championships in Bayville, New Jersey. He entered the Purple Belt Division and came in 2^nd place in the Gi Division and 3^rd place in the No Gi Division competing against Martial Artists 10 to 15 years younger than he is.

Shidoshi and Sensei Thompson, recently traveled to Costa Rica to train with pro mixed martial arts fighter Daniel Gracie (of the famous and popular Gracie family). Daniel Gracie is preparing for his upcoming professional MMA fight with the Bellator Fighting Championship to be aired on TV on Saturday March 26.

They had world class instruction to help improve their Jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts and at the same time got to be a part of Daniel’s training camp to prepare for the Light Heavyweight Tournament coming up later this month.

A Tristar Student could use your help!

Dear Tristar Students, families and friends,

Recently one of our Tristar Students, Zachary Gallagher, who is a Black Belt at the Eldersburg Dojo and represents all 3 schools on the Tristar Demo Team, suffered an accident and he and his family need our help.

Zachary, who is only 14 years old, had a sledding accident January 12th and is still recovering from his injuries. The right side of his brain is bruised and he has a temporal fracture in his head/face area. He is not able to talk and probably won't be able to for 3 months (he communicates by writing). At this point he is not even able to use a spoon without severe pain. Everything he eats has to be liquid or in some kind of drinkable form.

Due to his brain trauma, he cannot read for long periods of time. So far, around 5 minutes is his limit before he has severe pain with it. Watching TV is also very limited. Bright lights and loud noises also bring him pain and discomfort. The family was told by two of the doctors that if he does not stay still and listen to the instructions they gave him or if he falls, gets jarred or hit by anything that the consequences could be life threatening. At the moment, they expect him to fully recover but it is going to be a slow and painful process for him. Zachary does not have medical insurance and the medical bills are really starting to pile up.

The families at Tristar have, for many years, rallied around and supported many people who have needed our help within our schools and out in the community. In fact, I have never been less than amazed at what Tristar students, friends and families will do. You are the most wonderful people that I have been around. We are going to be doing what we can to help raise funds for the Gallagher family through the Dojo's. We are going to start by placing a donation jar at each of the schools. If you are able and would like to help, any donation would be wonderful. Please keep an eye out over the following months as we try to help and put a dent into the very expensive medical treatment that Zachary is receiving.

On Saturday, February 12th Tristar Martial Arts held a Blood Drive at their Eldersburg location. 36 potential donors came and 31 productive units were collected. Those 31 units could help up to 93 patients in the Carroll County area! Thank you to all that came out to support the drive. If you are interested in donating blood and would like more information, please call the Red Cross at 1-800- RED-CROSS. A unit of blood has the potential to save 3 lives!!!!

On Saturday, at Tristar Martial Arts' Eldersburg location there were 36 students on the mat participating in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu seminar conducted by Professor Brian Glick. Professor Glick is a Renzo Gracie Black Belt, Head Instructor at Brookyln JJU and Head Instructor at World Jiu-Jitsu United. The seminar went through some basics as well as some specific techniques. Students were working and sweating as he guided them through several jiu-jitsu technique flows. During his visit he also promoted seven Tristar Martial Arts students to their Blue Belt! Congratulations to Steve Benson, Pete Dougherty, John Fitzpatrick, Matt Parsons, Ben Patterson, Brandi Simmons, Chris Simmons and Sue Swensen!

Tristar Martial Arts performs at the Health Expo

Tristar Martial Arts was asked to participate in the Freedom Area Fitness Health Expo on January 29th at the South Carroll Senior Center. With the early date and the Demo Team transitioning new members, Sensei Thompson gathered several veterans to do a short demonstration that had the crowd entertained. Mr Dumas, Brian Gallagher, Emily Livesay and Dakota Ryan along with Sensei Thompson demonstrated practical self defense , weapons training as well as some board breaking. The Health Expo was well attended and hosted various health vendors offering services to keep you healthy and fit.

Why Every Parent Should Have Their Child Learn Martial Arts

There is a reason why Oprah, Dr Phil, Dr Laura Schlesinger, Jillian Michaels (Biggest Loser), Tony Robbins, pediatricians, child physiologists, and educators the world over all have alluded to the fact that Martial Arts is one of the most valuable things you can involve your child in.

It goes way beyond self defense and can help a child in nearly every aspect of their life. Improved health and fitness, athletic enhancement, increased confidence, better concentration, better behavior, more courteous and respectful; martial arts can help in all these areas.

Does this sound too good to be true? It’s not. As a matter of fact, many experts agree that in this day and age of escalating childhood obesity, increased playground violence and deteriorating family structure, if you do nothing else for your child, you should make sure that they learn how to swim and they learn martial arts. Let’s discuss why.

Self Defense – “Practice the fight so that you don’t have to” is a phrase that is often used to describe the self defense benefits of martial arts training. It refers to the fact that as a child becomes more confident in their ability to defend themselves thru martial arts training. The need to defend themselves automatically decreases because they unconsciously begin to carry themselves in a more confident manner and that confidence is projected to those around them, making them less vulnerable to predatory behavior. On top of that, martial arts’ training includes strategic self defense as well as actual self defense. Children are taught how to recognize a potentially dangerous situation and how to avoid confrontations.

Athletic Enhancement – There is a reason why virtually every professional sports team in virtually every major sport supplements their training with martial arts. Martial arts training offer several advantages. First off, it is amazingly effective in enhancing general coordination because it uses every part of the body in a balanced way. Upper body, lower body, right side, left side, forward movement, lateral movement, rotational movement, it’s all included in martial arts training.

Fitness - The three pieces of the fitness puzzle are strength, flexibility and endurance. Martial arts training demand a balance between the three. Therefore, a child who trains in martial arts will find their deficiencies greatly enhanced. Also, because of the balance in the three pieces of the fitness puzzle, they are less likely to injure themselves while participating in other athletic endeavors.

Health - Martial arts training is a proven link to better health for people of all ages, but especially children for several reasons. First off, it is great exercise. But because it is fun, kids don’t mind doing it. Discussing diet and lifestyle habits with students is a part of martial arts training, so children who grow up training develop healthy habits that will stick with them for life.

Concentration - Very few activities engage the mind, body and spirit more than martial arts. Because of this, a child’s ability to concentrate is greatly enhanced by their martial arts training and this concentration tends to be easily transferable to other activities.

Respect and Courtesy – Due to the fact that martial arts teaches techniques that could be harmful to others if applied, martial arts instructors are obliged to stress the importance of respect, courtesy, and restraint. It has been proven time and again that children who are skilled in martial arts tend to be extremely respectful, considerate and composed.

Confidence - Martial arts virtually always lends to increased confidence in children for a couple of specific reasons. First off, there are no bench sitters, every child participates and is judged not against others but more importantly, against their own potential. Secondly, the structure of martial arts is built on the concept of setting children up for success by giving them a series of realistic, short term goals that they can attain quickly while keeping them focused on an exciting, long term goal. Each time they experience success, their confidence improves until they tend to believe that with hard work and dedication, they can accomplish just about anything.

Before Winter Storms and Extreme Cold

Add the following supplies to your disaster supplies kit:

Rock salt to melt ice on walkways
Sand to improve traction
Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.

Prepare your home and family

Prepare for possible isolation in your home by having sufficient heating fuel; regular fuel sources may be cut off. For example, store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
Winterize your home to extend the life of your fuel supply by insulating walls and attics, caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic.
Winterize your house, barn, shed or any other structure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, livestock or equipment. Clear rain gutters; repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm.
Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing.
Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions.
Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts).
Know ahead of time what you should do to help elderly or disabled friends, neighbors or employees.
Hire a contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow - or water, if drains on flat roofs do not work.

Prepare your car

Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car:
- Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing.
- Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean.
- Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels.
- Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes andrepair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning.
- Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas.
- Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly.
- Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability.
- Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well.
- Thermostat - ensure it works properly.
- Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level.
Install good winter tires. Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdictions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chains or snow tires with studs.
Maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.
Place a winter emergency kit in each car that includes:
- a shovel
- windshield scraper and small broom
- flashlight
- battery powered radio
- extra batteries
- water
- snack food
- matches
- extra hats, socks and mittens
- First aid kit with pocket knife
- Necessary medications
- blanket(s)
- tow chain or rope
- road salt and sand
- booster cables
- emergency flares
- fluorescent distress flag

Dress for the Weather

Wear several layers of loose fitting, lightweight, warm clothing rather than one layer of heavy clothing. The outer garments should be tightly woven and water repellent.
Wear mittens, which are warmer than gloves.
Wear a hat.
Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs.

Out Holiday Shopping? “Be Aware,”

Shopping takes up a lot of time during the holidays. Shoppers are so busy thinking about all the things that need to be done, they fail to be aware of their surroundings. It can also make people careless when they are out and about. This makes them easy pickings for purse snatchers and street robbers.

“It doesn’t have to be this way,” says Chief Jim Johnson. He says that people are not reading their environment and in too much of a hurry to add safety to their list of must do’s. He says to scan your immediate area. Don’t assume that because there are people around that you are safe and secure.

The Chief advises everyone to “Focus on your own personal safety and the safety of those who may be with you. Just like every good police officer is trained in reading the environment ask yourself questions when you are out.”

When you are in a parking lot or garage, be alert to someone who appears to be standing around for no good reason. He or she might be waiting for someone to pick them up or that person could be an opportunist waiting to grab your shopping bags or your purse.

Here are some things to think about when shopping.

Always park in well lit areas and park as close as possible to the entrance of the store or mall.
Don’t talk on a cell phone when walking to and from your vehicle. You need to keep your full attention on your surroundings.
Don’t electronically unlock your vehicle until you are within door opening distance. This helps stop a thief from getting into the car and waiting to strike when you least expect it.
If you are ready to leave the mall and feel uneasy about entering the parking lot or garage by yourself, stay in the mall and ask for a security escort.
Do not open your car door to anyone in a parking lot or garage. If you believe that you are in danger, call 911 immediately.

A primary factor in crime prevention is being aware of our surroundings and potential areas of danger - thereby closing the criminal's window of opportunity.

Busy shoppers can be targeted for purse snatching and other forms of street robbery. The malls are full of folks with money to spend. As we speed along, focused on getting through our treasure hunt, a criminal can size up a potential victim.

Outside of the mall, stick to well-lit, well-traveled streets, walkways and parking areas - for both walking and parking.
Stay off the cell phone as you walk through parking lots and streets. It is a distraction that makes you vulnerable to robbers, and your cell phone itself is a tempting target.
Don't flash large amounts of cash or offer tempting targets for theft such as expensive jewelry or clothing.
Carry a purse or shoulder bag close to your body, not dangling by straps. Put a wallet in an inside pocket of your coat or front pant's pocket.
Don't fumble for house or car keys. Have them in your hand, ready to use when you reach the door.

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind regarding the car or house you've left behind while on your travels.

ALWAYS lock your car and residence, even if you are away for only a few moments.
Do NOT leave valuables - gifts, cell phones, purse or clothing - in open view in your car. Take valuables away with you, lock them in your trunk, or cover them in an unobtrusive way.
Leave lights turned on both inside and outside your residence after dark. Criminals don't like bright places.
If you will be away from home for several days, make arrangements for someone to pick up your mail and newspapers. An overstuffed mailbox is a sure sign that no one is home, and burglars are tempted to check those envelopes for holiday gifts that might be enclosed.

County police hope that by being aware and keeping these few tips in mind, crime won't take a toll on your holidays.

'Tis The Season: Beware Of Purse Snatchers

The holidays are swiftly approaching. The stores are putting up their decorations and purse snatchers are practicing their skills. The Baltimore County Police Department wants everyone to be aware that thieves look forward to holidays as much as everyone else. Maybe more so! The department asks women to beware of purse snatchers because they look at women carrying pocketbooks as easy prey and fast money. The thieves know that during the holidays, shoppers are distracted and are not as careful as they should be when out.

Here are some things that can be done to thwart the would-be thief.

Keep your purse close to your body.
If the pocketbook has long straps, shorten them.
If possible, avoid carrying a large purse when shopping. A fanny pack is compact and more difficult for a thief to grab and run.
Carry only the credit cards you intend to use, leave the others behind.
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use checks or check cards.
Use ATMs wisely. Have the card ready before approaching the machine, and use one in a high traffic area.
Be aware of the environment. Don't walk or park in poorly lit areas. Don't take so-called shortcuts through wooded areas. Don't be distracted by a cell phone conversation.
Have car keys ready before leaving the office, store or mall.
If you believe someone is following you, cross the street, switch directions, walk into a store or restaurant. If you are really scared, yell. Don't be embarrassed. Your safety is more important.

A Holiday Shopping Reminder

As you do your holiday shopping, don't give a thief an opportunity.

Do NOT leave valuables in open view in your car. Put them in the trunk, or take them along with you. This is the time of the year when thieves do their own form of "window shopping." They look into parked cars for gifts and other merchandise, and they will break through car windows to get at such valuables.

It takes only a few seconds for a criminal to break into your car. So remember: when you leave your car, leave it empty.

This month Tristar Martial Arts Academy of Eldersburg, Mount Airy and Westminster will offer Kids Street Safe Seminars to children in the community free of charge. The seminars will be held on October 23 from 1:45 – 2:45 PM in Mount Airy and at our Eldersburg and Westminster location on October 29 from 6:00 – 6:45 PM . Every 26 seconds a child is abducted! The statistics are alarming! The seminar is to inform parents and their kids of the dangers faced from predators. Safety tactics are discussed as well as some vital facts all parents should know.

The material covered is part of the Kid Safe Network program. The Kid Safe network is a non-profit children’s safety and danger awareness organization that provides free child safety and awareness seminar materials designed to educate parents, educators and citizens of the dangers children face every day.

TIPS TO HANDLE BULLIES AT SCHOOL

1) Ignore the bully. Listen to the threats, but don’t react.Tell yourself that you don’t have to get back at the bully.Ignore the threats!

2) Agree with the bully. If the bully calls you names, agree! Let the insults go – don’t fight back.

3) Be nice to the bully. Treat the bully as a friend instead of an enemy. You can turn a threatening situation into a friendly one.

4) Walk away. Don’t get into it – just walk away.This takes the wind out of the bully’s sails!

5) Refuse to fight.The winner of a fight is the one who prevents it.Stick up for yourself.Just say “no” to fighting.

6) Call for help. Call a teacher, a friendly adult, a police officer – anyone who can help you stop a fight before it happens. Remember the best way to handle a bad situation is to not put yourself in that situation! Be aware and stay away from trouble.

Shidoshi Thompson with his training partner for the weekend, Hanshi Moti Horenstein who is a former UFC fighter, just appeared on the Deadliest Warrior TV show as the Israeli Commando expert, was a bodyguard in the Miami Vice Movie and holds the Guinness Book of World Records for breaking bats by kicking through them!

Tristar Martial Arts Instructors travel to Brooklyn to train with some of the best instructors in BJJ and MMA!

This past weekend was awesome as the Tristar Martial Arts instructors travelled to Brooklyn to train in BJJ and MMA with some of the best teachers in the martial arts!

The training lasted for over 7 hours and was phenomenal. We got to train with Professor Gene Dunn and Professor Brian Glick who are Black Belts under Renzo Gracie and run World Jiu-Jitsu United. We also got to train with:

Jamie Crowder who is a two-time national Muay Thai champion, and is one of the head instructors for Renzo Gracie Muay Thai in NYC.

Teimoc Johnston-Ono (Judo 7th Dan) who is a Judo US National, US Open and World Champion. He was the head coach of the US Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs, CO, and continues to coach and teach at the prestigious New York Athletic Club. He holds a Black Belt under Renzo Gracie, and a number of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu Masters titles.

John Cholish who attended Cornell University, where he started for the Division I wrestling program. Upon graduating, he began training in Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. He trains and fights as a member of the Renzo Gracie team.

Chris Encarnation who is a Black Belt under Renzo Gracie, and teaches, trains and coaches at the NYC Gracie Academy.

Tristar Martial Arts of Eldersburg, Mount Airy and Westminster was invited to be a part of the Martial Arts Supershow this year. The Supershow was held in Las Vegas from July 5-7 and was sponsored by Century Martial Arts Supply. Keith Thompson, owner of Tristar, was asked to speak at the Supershow to share some ideas on the success of Tristar Martial Arts in Carroll County. Thousands of martial artists from all around the world were in attendance. Other featured speakers included Marcus Luttrell (US Navy Seal and author of Lone Survivor), Lyoto Machida and Matt Hughes (former UFC Champions), along with Ricaro Liborio Coach of American Top Team (one of the most successful Mixed Martial Arts Teams). Many other UFC, WEC and Strikeforce stars were in attendance to help with the training.
